The Kansas City Chiefs are giving rookie receiver Cyrus Allen an undeniable opportunity based on the lack of depth added to the position in the 2026 offseason. Allen is the most noteworthy piece added to the receiver room, with the expectation appearing to be that both Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice will take a leap after a frustrating 2025 season. Regardless of how this plays out, the door is open for Allen to take a meaningful role, and this appears to be off to an encouraging start in training camp.
FOX4KC's Harold R. Kuntz highlighted Allen's early camp performance, posting nice catches that the rookie made during 7-on-7 drills. This is far from meaningful production, but a step in the right direction in what is a wide-open competition. There simply is no way around the fact that after the departures of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown in free agency, the position is an area of concern.

A concern that Allen is already working to answer, with what has been a solid start in the first days of camp. One that the pass catcher can build upon after being a potential steal in the draft at 176th overall in the fifth round. Perhaps it was his inconsistent production in college, bouncing around to three different programs, but his last year at Cincinnati was enough to make Brett Veach believe.
Could Cyrus Allen be the dark horse answer to the Chiefs' receiver problems?
Allen's final college season was excellent with Cincinnati, piling up 13 touchdowns while the yardage total was a bit less eye-popping, with 674 receiving yards. It is telling that Allen was so often a scorer and a threat in the red zone, giving insight as to the value he could provide as a plus route runner, something that the Chiefs are in desperate need of.
It would take noted training camp struggles for the Chiefs to deny the rookie an opportunity when you consider that it is Nikko Remigio and Jalen Royals competing with the pass catcher for playing time. Remigio, so far in his career, has been the entrenched return man on special teams, and Royals was all but forgotten by the coaching staff last season.
No question, this campaign is off to a great start with Allen being one of the players fans will have highlighted as an obvious area of focus moving forward. The hope is that the receiver can grow into a consistent enough role to provide needed depth if any of Kansas City's starting options were to miss time. A hope that appears well-founded if the early camp performance is any indication.
