Cyrus Allen gives Chiefs fans plenty to be excited about after preseason debut

It is hard for Kansas City Chiefs fans not to continue to buy into the hype surrounding Cyrus Allen after Saturday's preseason debut. The rookie pass-catcher finished with a modest two catches for 20 yards, but one of these was a leaping grab over the middle, with Allen going up top to save what was an overthrow, and he flashed elite athleticism. It is the type of play that perfectly sums up why Chiefs fans are so excited and believe that Allen could thrive in his first season under Andy Reid and offer Patrick Mahomes a stabilizing target.

Another piece that Kansas City fans are going to love about the receiver is his postgame interview, where the rookie was asked whether or not he felt he was able to show what he can do. Allen responded, "just a tad bit" before pivoting to the next question. This response makes it clear that both he and Chiefs fans believe he is just scratching the surface of what could be accomplished with Kansas City.

Mahomes badly needs a reliable target and route-running technician as we head into yet another season with question marks around Rashee Rice and potential false hopes of Xavier Worthy taking a big jump. Rice will forever remain a wildcard when it comes to staying on the field and not making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Worthy is yet to live up to his potential, and Tyquan Thornton is coming off a career year but has yet to put together consistent seasons throughout his career.

Added on top of this is the fact that you want to protect Travis Kelce early in the season and lean on other targets, saving the legend's best moments for when the season matters most.

Even if every current starting receiver is able to be at their absolute best, the Chiefs need injury insurance and a fourth option that can consistently deliver when called on. Allen is showing signs of being that answer throughout camp and flashed his potential yet again in Saturday's preseason opener.

Putting it simply, there isn't anything not to like about the rookie so far. He's clearly dialed in and doing everything in his power to get better and win the trust of both Mahomes and Reid. The veteran quarterback already has an appreciation and level of chemistry with the rookie, enough that it would be shocking not to see a handful of early-season targets as the Chiefs find out exactly who they can trust.

Allen wasn't perfect on Saturday, but he showed exactly why KC fans are so excited about his potential impact. It is impossible not to buy in and believe that Brett Veach and Reid have done it yet again, finding an overlooked draft gem on day three.
