Chiefs waste no time shipping Wanya Morris off to Falcons in trade

Brett Veach honored the OT's trade request and was able to jump one round in the 2027 draft.

Just two days ago, Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Wanya Morris requested a trade from the team, emphasizing an opportunity for a bigger role on a different offense. While the news certainly wasn't a shock, as Morris has constantly underperformed when on the field and garnered less and less playing time, acquiring anything for the former third-round pick would be difficult.

General manager Brett Veach has been busy of late, restructuring the contract of George Karlafis to free up cap space to sign the Chiefs' rookie class, bringing in veteran L'Jarius Sneed to a one-year KC homecoming deal, and shelling out the biggest contract the NFL has ever seen to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, keeping the three-time Super Bowl MVP in KC 'for life.'

Kansas City has a bevy of tackles fighting for a starting spot on the right side of the line, while Josh Simmons seems to have left tackle secured for years to come. Which perhaps made it easier to part ways with Morris and send the 25-year-old to the Atlanta Falcons along with a 2027 7th-round pick in exchange for a 2027 6th-round pick.

Chiefs show trust in young OT room by unloading Wanya Morris off to Atlanta

In his three years in Kansas City, Morris started in 16 games for the Chiefs, primarily at left tackle, and accumulated 12 penalties. He certainly had his down moments on the field, but played well in spurts when called upon and even scored a "Big Man Touchdown" in week two of the 2024 season against the rival Cincinnati Bengals.

This swift move by the Chiefs also signals a major trust in Simmons to hold things down on the left, despite his awkward absence a season ago from the team. But when he was on the field, Simmons, in a word, dominated his competition. And it also shows the confidence the Chiefs have in the battle that's going on for right tackle superiority.

Veteran Jaylon Moore is in the second season of a sizable contract and looks to have the inside track for the job, according to Andy Reid. However, young bulls Esa Pole and Khalil Benson, both undrafted projects from the 2024 and 2025 drafts, respectively, are also carving out a name for themselves in what should be one of the more interesting storylines going into Chiefs training camp in late July.

One thing is for certain, and that's that Morris found himself on a new franchise that is desperate for young talent at the offensive tackle position. He will likely start the season sat behind longtime stalwart Jake Matthews and reunite with former Chiefs RT Jawaan Taylor. Morris had a rocky career in KC, but perhaps a fresh beginning in Atlanta could be what he needs to take the next leap in his football journey.
