When offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy left the Kansas City Chiefs, the hope was that a change of scenery would provide a better chance at a head coaching job. It was difficult to gain attention with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes demanding all the headlines. However, Chiefs fans understood and missed the value of having Bieniemy in the building.
The former offensive coordinator was the cliche bad cop to Reid's player-friendly approach. Bieniemy wasn't shy about getting onto his players, no matter their accomplishments. That is a skill the Chiefs' coaching staff glaringly lacks since the departure of the former offensive coordinator. This was illustrated by a video of Bieniemy working in his new role in Chicago. The running backs coach doesn't shy away from yelling at his players, pushing them to be at their best.

Kansas City Misses the Harsh Critiques Former Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy Offered
This is the type of energy and focus that Matt Nagy lacks as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator. Yes, the Chiefs did make their annual AFC Championship appearance and play in yet another Super Bowl. However, there is no denying the offense wasn't what it once was. Patrick Mahomes was consistently asked to elevate marginal talent and put the team on his back.
Only a player at Mahomes' elite level could ever hope to accomplish what the quarterback did with this level of coaching and offensive talent. Like it or not, the Chiefs miss Eric Bieniemy and the obvious edge the coach offered. Whether it is through a surprise reunion or a change in approach, this is what the Chiefs must find moving forward.
Eric Bieniemy wasn't content with simply going through the motions and putting in the work. The coach demanded that you do things exactly right and put in the needed effort to improve each and every week. While Andy Reid is an incredibly accomplished coach, this is the one skill set the offensive genius is arguably lacking.
Having Bieniemy able to demand improvement was an important role. One that this team is so obviously lacking and could easily find again if they move on from Nagy at some point. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see the Chiefs and Bieniemy reunite in the next season or two as the Chiefs continue to search to replace the needed skillset of the former offensive coordinator.
