The Kansas City Chiefs enter an important offseason after falling in the Super Bowl. While the status of Travis Kelce and several key free agents are some of the biggest storylines, the first item of business is dealing with the constant shuffling of their coaching staff.

The Chiefs already lost safeties coach Donald D’Alesio to the Baltimore Ravens but they were able to add a talented member to the defensive staff in former Jackson State linebackers coach Chris Orr. Kansas City made a second valuable addition on Thursday and it serves as a significant homecoming for a member of the 2019 Super Bowl staff.

Chiefs Hiring Former Super Bowl Champion Matt House as Defensive Assistant

According to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Chiefs are expected to hire Matt House as a senior defensive assistant on Andy Reid’s staff. House previously spent three seasons in Kansas City as the team’s linebackers coach and left to become LSU’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

House returned to the NFL last season as the linebackers coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars but was not retained after the firing of Doug Pederson.

House’s return and previous experience works great with a linebacking group that features Leo Chenal, Drue Tranquill and pending free agent Nick Bolton. Considering his impact may be more all around this time in KC as a general assistant, too, that opens up the door for him to help in many areas of the operation with his experience.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has turned this unit into arguably the Chiefs' biggest strength as a team, but a drastic loss like the one they suffered in the Super Bowl is going to prompt a search for ways to improve. Bringing back a familiar face may be just what this group needs to get back to their championship standard in 2025.
