The Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with the aftermath of the Super Bowl and now head into an offseason with plenty of questions. Travis Kelce opened the door to a possible retirement on Wednesday and while Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes are returning, the Chiefs will have to make big decisions on several free agents including Trey Smith in the coming weeks.

But while the Chiefs will wait on those decisions, their first item of business will be reconstructing their coaching staff. Kansas City already lost safeties coach Donald D’Alesio to the Baltimore Ravens but they’re also adding some talent including a former linebacker that is rising up the coaching ranks.

Chiefs Hire Former Standout Linebacker Chris Orr to Defensive Staff

According to 247Sports Matt Zenitz, the Chiefs are hiring Jackson State linebackers coach Chris Orr to their defensive staff. Orr enjoyed a standout career at the University of Wisconsin including a senior season where he collected 78 tackles with 14 for loss and 11.5 sacks in 2019 and joined the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

Orr appeared in three games with Carolina during the 2020 season but never played in the NFL again, serving as Wisconsin’s director of player development upon his release in 2021. Orr returned to the field by spending two seasons with the USFL’s New Jersey Generals and the 2024 season with the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions but spent the past season as the linebackers coach at Jackson State.

After one season in the collegiate ranks, Orr is already making his way to the NFL and will be united with his former Wisconsin teammate and Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal. It’s a quick rise for a player who saw plenty of success during his collegiate career and will now be looking to make the same impact as a coach.
