The Chiefs officially reunited with former CB Steven Nelson on Monday, signing him to the practice squad despite his retirement this June.

This acquisition was rumored over the weekend and head coach Andy Reid's comments during his press conference seemingly suggested the team intended to sign him. It's a stunning move regardless but Kansas City now has an answer for the significant issues they've had in the secondary.

After spending the first four seasons of his career with the organization, Nelson is now returning home to the team who selected him in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Chiefs Reunite With CB Steven Nelson Ahead of Playoffs

Once Nelson left the Chiefs following the expiration of his rookie contract, he played for the Steelers, Eagles, and Texans. His last two years with Houston were particularly impressive, surrendering an 80.5 and 73.3 passer rating when targeted over the last two years.

With Jaylen Watson likely done for the season, Kansas City needs help. Nazeeh Johnson and Chamarri Conner haven't played well, while Joshua Williams suffered an injury during Sunday's win against the Chargers.

Even if Nelson isn't as good as he was in 2023, he's likely still an upgrade over the current options. For a team who plans to win a historic third straight Super Bowl, it's a fantastic move. Perhaps Nelson's age (31) and lack of playing time in 2024 are problems. If that's the case, the Chiefs won't play him.

Getting as many shots on goal remains general manager Brett Veach's top priority. He's done a fantastic job of leaving no stone unturned and Nelson's signing just represents the latest example.

He won't play next week against the Browns and might not on Christmas against the Steelers either. Regardless, signing Nelson proves this team is serious and "all-in" to win another Lombardi Trophy.

As a result, Chiefs fans should be thrilled with the organization's decision.
