UPDATE: The Chiefs and Trey Smith have agreed to a record-breaking four-year deal on Tuesday. What follows is the original story prior to the agreement.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to begin training camp later this month, and the roster is finally starting to take shape after a flurry of offseason departures and additions. One major storyline still needs to be addressed though, and that's what'll happen with stud right guard Trey Smith.

A Pro Bowler and stalwart on the right side of the line, Smith hopes to become the highest-paid guard in the league on a long-term deal. He's currently the only player in the NFL on the franchise tag, and the Chiefs have until 3:00 CT on Tuesday to come to a deal or else Smith will stay on the tag.

There have been rumors that the two sides were making progress, and one new report suggests a four-year extension will be announced prior to Tuesday's deadline.

Chiefs Close to Trey Smith Contract Extension per New Report

According to X user SlickRickScoops, who has developed a reputation for getting information before national reporters do, the Chiefs will announce a record-breaking four-year contract extension with Smith on Tuesday.

Take this all with a grain of salt, because it's just one report and not from an established media member. That said, the user has been right in the past and the general expectation was that Smith would eventually sign a long-term deal. Trading Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears already took one All-Pro guard off the line, so Kansas City can't afford to lose Smith too.

A former sixth-round pick, Smith has more than earned the raise he'll receive regardless. He's beloved in the community and a great teammate, making this a fairly easy decision for the Chiefs. At only 26 years old, Smith should have plenty of great years left, and he forms one of the best interior lines alongside fellow Pro Bowler Creed Humphrey.

Protecting Patrick Mahomes is the most important goal for this offense. Smith helps the Chiefs accomplish that, and Kansas City certainly wouldn't be better off letting him walk. By signing Smith now instead of waiting until next year, they'll give him security while also avoiding a distraction throughout the season.

This is a team that expects to return to the Super Bowl. Here's hoping SlickRickScoops is on the money, but we'll know one way or another soon enough.
