An unfortunate reality of the NFL is that success comes with a price. For an organization with as much sustained success as the Kansas City Chiefs, it gets very difficult to retain talent, including the roster, coaching staff, and the front office. The rest of the league who wants to catch up to the Chiefs poach key members of the organization with the hopes of closing the gap.

That is what happened with Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi. He is the latest Chiefs executive to land a GM job after he accepted the offer from the Tennessee Titans on Friday.

Replacing a key staffer who has been with the team for 16 years will certainly be hard for the organization. Yet, at this point, it shouldn't come as a surprise when Brett Veach loses key decision-makers. In fact, Veach released a heartfelt message about Borgonzi's departure on Saturday.

Chiefs' official social media account released Veach's supportive statement for his long-time coworker.

Brett Veach Releases Statement on Losing Mike Borgonzi to Titans

Borgonzi's time in Kansas City predates Veach's. Borgonzi was first hired as the administrator of college scouting in 2009 and slowly moved up the ladder. He became the assistant director of pro scouting in 2013 when Veach was brought in as the pro and college personnel analyst. The two worked very closely together ever since.

"I am excited to see Mike get his chance to lead an organization. The Titans made an outstanding hire. "

Veach became the Chiefs GM in 2017, and Borgonzi first became his director of football operations in 2018 and then was made the assistant GM in 2021. Now, he will get his chance to prove himself as the lead decision-maker in his first non-Chiefs team in the NFL. We wish him nothing but the best.
