Chiefs Recent Draft Bust Will Be Expendable After the NFL Draft

Skyy Moore could be in trouble if the Chiefs add a wide receiver during the draft or in the UDFA period.

Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, most Kansas City Chiefs fans expect the team to address the running back position, the trenches, and tight end. However, fans wouldn’t be shocked to see the Chiefs add a wide receiver in the NFL draft or the UDFA period.

The Chiefs are loaded at wide receiver with Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Juju Smith-Schuster, Justyn Ross, Skyy Moore, and Nikko Remigio. They could look to add more talent to the position, especially with Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson leaving in free agency.

If Kansas City takes a receiver next week during the NFL’s three-day event, that would not be great news for Moore. The former second-round pick hasn’t lived up to high expectations after he was taken with the 54th overall pick.

As a rookie in 2022, Moore spent most of his time on offense (29% of snaps), despite seeing a little bit of action on special teams. The 5-foot-10 receiver had 22 receptions (33 targets) for 250 yards in 16 games (three starts).

It wasn’t an overly spectacular rookie season by Moore. But the Chiefs also had Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Hardman, and Kadarius Toney at wide receiver, who Mahomes could lean on.

Fast forward to the 2023 campaign, and Moore saw his playing time increase drastically, up to 53% on offense. However, the extra playing time and snaps didn’t lead to better numbers for the young wide receiver.

The former Western Michigan standout had 21 receptions (38 targets) for 244 yards. Moore saw his catch% decrease from 66.7 to 55.3. His yards after catch per reception went down from 6.7 to 5.2.

Meanwhile, Rice, who was a rookie at the time, surpassed Moore on Kansas City’s depth chart and became one of Mahomes’ top offensive targets. Despite the Chiefs winning their second consecutive Super Bowl, Moore’s roster outlook wasn’t looking great heading into 2024.

This past season, Moore only played in six games. He missed most of the year due to a core muscle injury, which placed him on injured reserve. Luckily for the Chiefs, they weren’t leaning on his production as they had Rice (for a short period), Worthy, Kelce, and DeAndre Hopkins.

There was a thought Moore might’ve been active for Super Bowl LIX since his practice window was open, but it never happened. That said, the former second-round pick is on thin ice heading into training camp and could be in danger of not making the roster.

The Chiefs have selected a wide receiver in the last four drafts, and it would be shocking if they suddenly went against that trend. Moore is entering the last year of his deal before becoming a free agent in 2026. He only has a $2.05 million cap hit for 2025, making it easy to move on from either through trade or an outright release.
