The Kansas City Chiefs made headlines this week with a late trade of receiver Skyy Moore. It was a wise move when it appeared Moore was already destined to become a roster cut. Now in San Francisco, Moore has a chance to breathe life back into his career and has taken away one less concern for the Chiefs. With this in mind, it seems the final roster spot is destined to be Tyquan Thornton after the receiver's impressive camp performance.

If Rashee Rice starts the season on the active roster as expected, there simply isn't room for any of the remaining receivers on the bubble. The one caveat to this is if Hollywood Brown's injury creates an additional spot. If that isn't the case, it seems that Nikko Remigio will be the odd man out at the receiver position. While there is immense value in having the pass catcher on special teams, the receiver hasn't flashed as consistently as Thornton.

Keeping Remigio simply doesn't make sense if you're attempting to give Patrick Mahomes the best chance to find a surprise contributor. Thornton has outplayed the special teams piece at every turn, making it impossible to justify keeping him off the roster in Week 1.

Chiefs Receiver Nikko Remigio Appears to be Destined to Become Final Cut

Still, the Chiefs have a lot of respect for what Remigio brings to the table and clearly will attempt to keep the receiver around. If another team doesn't swoop in, the Chiefs will re-sign the pass catcher to the practice squad with the expectation of elevating Remigio when Rice is eventually suspended this season.

Most years, Remigio's preseason effort would be enough to make the final roster and lock him safely in place. However, Thornton has put together quite an August resume, demanding that the Chiefs make a difficult decision. Cutting Remigio is the only path forward unless the franchise is willing to carry seven receivers, or an unexpected injury changes plans in the final week of the preseason.

For Remigio, this is a frustrating reality for a piece that has more than made his case as to why he should make the final roster. Still, it is the right decision to cut the receiver and attempt a practice squad reunion. One that will be far easier to sell with the understanding that it appears only a matter of time until another spot at the position will be open.
