The Kansas City Chiefs made a surprise trade on Wednesday night, moving on from struggling receiver Skyy Moore. The writing was on the wall that Moore had no chance to make the final Kansas City roster. The moment Rashee Rice wasn't suspended for the season's first weeks, the franchise had a trio of options to choose between for the final spot. The only possible argument for Moore was the veteran's experience and time spent with Patrick Mahomes. Drops and inconsistent play made it clear it was time to turn the page.
With this in mind, the Chiefs' final depth chart at the receiver position is now clearly in view heading into the final week of the preseason. Barring any injuries or major struggles, this is how the Chiefs will lineup at the position in Week 1:
- Rashee Rice
- Xavier Worthy
- Hollywood Brown
- JuJu Smith-Schuster
- Jalen Royals
- Tyquan Thornton
The one surprise here is Thornton taking the last spot from Nikko Remigio. In truth, this is still a toss-up that is going to depend entirely on how much value the Chiefs put on Remigio's special teams contributions. However, it is impossible to ignore Thornton's consistent camp production and the chemistry within the offense.
Trade: Chiefs are sending WR Skyy Moore to the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers have been decimated with injuries at WR. The Chiefs could potentially carry both receivers as well if Brown's injury is going to linger into the regular season. One could also easily argue that Remigio could be kept based on the expected suspension of Rice. While the receiver is expected to start the season with the franchise, his future remains murky. However, if the franchise is going to simply go with six options heading into the season, Thornton is the better choice.
For Moore, this is a chance at a fresh start with a franchise that is dealing with its own fair share of injury woes. If there is one coaching staff capable of unlocking Moore's potential outside of Kansas City, it is with the 49ers. The offense badly needs a healthy option as injuries have continued to pile up throughout camp.
It is becoming increasingly possible that Brock Purdy could be targeting the former Chief in Week 1. This isn't based on Moore's clear fit, but a level of desperation that is going to require San Francisco to roll with questionable options to start the season.
