The Kansas City Chiefs had a constant turnover of backup quarterbacks during the Patrick Mahomes era. Fortunately, the team never had to rely on their QB2 for an extended stretch thanks to Mahomes' health. Yet, it has been a weakness at times that Chiefs fans have felt uneasy about over the years.

This offseason, the Chiefs brought in perhaps the most overqualified QB2 of the Mahomes era. Gardner Minshew, who started 22 games in the last two seasons and has 46 starts under his belt in his six years in the NFL, will likely begin the season second in the pecking order. While Bailey Zappe continues to challenge him for that spot in the offseason workouts, Minshew is saying all the right things to solidify his spot as QB2.

Ed Easton Jr. of USA Today reported on Minshew's comments on Thursday, about Mahomes, highlighting how the former Raiders QB has the right attitude about his new role. Minshew had nothing but praise for Mahomes, underlining how great of an experience it has been for him to watch the best in the league practice.

"It's been awesome, man. It's crazy watching him every day. It's been really cool. Watching how he prepares, how he takes notes, how he practices, and how he has fun. There's so much he does at the highest, best level that it's really cool to be around."

Minshew added that watching Mahomes prepare and get his body right has been something he really wanted to see when he came to Kansas City. The 29-year-old said that there is a lot to take from the way Mahomes trains.

This is the type of approach that will keep Minshew in his roster spot and make the competition difficult for Zappe and Chris Oladokun. Things could obviously change when training camp rolls around in July, but it's safe to say that the QB2 role is Minshew's to lose, especially after heaping praise on the franchise star.
