Former Chiefs QB Still Desperately Trying to Find a Job After OTAs

The Kansas City Chiefs made a quarterback change this offseason, bringing in Gardner Minshew behind starter Patrick Mahomes. It was a solid addition that offers you plenty of starting experience if Mahomes is forced to miss any time. For Minshew, it is a chance to sit back and learn from the great quarterback and coaching duo in the league after last year's failures. The veteran had a chance to win the starting job for the Las Vegas Raiders and couldn't live up to expectations.

If forced to take a backseat again, there simply isn't a better landing spot in the league. However, this does leave the future of former Chiefs quarterback Carson Wentz in question. The veteran quarterback is the one established option still searching for a landing spot. This comes as a surprise with lesser talents without starting experience already having signed in the 2025 offseason. Wentz being a free agent at this point in the offseason means his search for a new landing spot is going to be incredibly difficult.

Former Chiefs Quarterback Carson Wentz Continues Offseason Search

Barring an injury or trade, there simply isn't a starting or backup job that appears to be up for grabs. The most reasonable explanation is that Wentz was holding out hope of competing for a starting job after spending time with Reid and Mahomes. This isn't a wild expectation with current backup Minshew having just found another chance to start in the 2024 season.

Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Joe Flacco, and Geno Smith stand out as other recent examples of career backups who found their way into another chance as a starter. However, if this was the goal of the former KC quarterback, it is safe to say it was a failure. Now, Wentz is going to be lucky to land a backup job with a contender. With a fresh crop of rookie quarterbacks joining the league and the majority of serviceable backups already signing, things look truly grim for the former Chief.

Looking around the league, there isn't one team that jumps out as a fit. Perhaps the only exception is the New Orleans Saints after the surprise retirement of Derek Carr. While the signing would make sense for the organization, it would be a poor career move for the quarterback. This points to just how slim the remaining options are for a player who many believed to be among the league's best backup options for the 2025 season.
