Travis Kelce is, pretty inarguably, the greatest tight end in Kansas City Chiefs history. That's a lot to say from a player who shared the same position as the legendary Tony Gonzalez, but that speaks volumes about his impact on the organization.
One of the most efficient playmakers in playoff history, Kelce's chemistry with Patrick Mahomes has made them one of the deadliest duos of all time. As such, replacing Kelce once he rides into the sunset will be a tall order.
That's why Bill Barnwell's projected trade for Dallas Goedert makes no sense at all. In his latest article, the ESPN writer claimed that the Chiefs should use the Philadelphia Eagles' veteran as a potential placeholder at the position.
The Chiefs need to find a replacement for Travis Kelce, but not Dallas Goedert
"He would give the Chiefs some leverage against the possibility of Travis Kelce slowing down as the season goes along and work alongside the future Hall of Famer as a potential mismatch over the middle of the field," Barnwell wrote. "...Goedert could also be the replacement for Kelce as the primary tight end in Kansas City if he signs a new deal after the season."
First things first. On the one hand, the Chiefs could certainly use another pass catcher. Goedert isn't a superstar by any means, but he'd be a solid complement to Kelce on a team-friendly deal, with no strings attached beyond this season.
But on the other hand, Goedert is 31 and hasn't been much of a factor in the passing game. Yes, the Chiefs can probably get him at a big discount, as the Eagles will probably tank the season, but how could they even consider him as Kelce's potential replacement at his age?
If anything, the Chiefs should consider making a run at Sam LaPorta. He's already gone on the record to call out the Detroit Lions over his contract situation, and while they can always franchise-tag him, he might force his way out by requesting a trade.
Even if they don't go after LaPorta, the Chiefs should explore other options for their future at the position. They can always pursue someone in the NFL Draft; there's no need to go after a 31-year-old who's never been a star. He had a career-best 11 touchdowns last season, but that's unsustainable.
It's Travis Kelce we're talking about here. There's no such thing as just replacing him, and his eventual retirement will change everything for the passing game. Maybe the Chiefs won't even look to replace him straight up and will try to use their wide receivers more.
The mere fact that Barnwell or someone else would even suggest that Goedert could be Kelce's replacement is borderline insulting. He'd be welcome if the Chiefs wanted to get him, but that wouldn't move the needle or change their plans to find a long-term solution at the position.
