As much as the Kansas City Chiefs should be embarrassed by their two-game losing streak, everything they want is still right in front of them. Seattle and Denver were able to expose clear offensive and defensive concerns. It's no coincidence that Kenneth Walker III's two quietest Chiefs games have come during this pair of defeats.
Kansas City no longer remains in the driver's seat in the AFC West and must rely on itself to win every possible game from here on out, and on other teams to take care of the Broncos. For Patrick Mahomes, it means getting back to playing at an MVP level, despite the torurous wide receiver play that continues to torment this franchise.
Through seven games this season, Mahomes is on pace for over 4,300 passing yards, 29 TDs, and just 10 interceptions on an over 66% completion percentage. It isn't a bad start by any means, but it doesn't match the elite expectations fans have come to have for a quarterback whose season has never ended short of the AFC Championship when healthy.
Patrick Mahomes can take the Chiefs and himself to another level to get 2026 season back on track
Mahomes numbers are where Chiefs fans will start to point to the complete lack of consistent receiving talent outside. Tyquan Thornton was a true game changer before he got hurt, but it remains unknown whether he will return late this year.
Rashee Rice is the epitome of unreliable, as his off-the-field issues are well-documented, and at this point, he is a legit injury risk every snap he plays. As for Xavier Worthy, he is now in his third season and just does not seem to understand what he is supposed to do on the field.
Hopes of adding a wide receiver before Tuesday's trade deadline are what many are holding out for. If so, it is simply a matter of time until Mahomes is haunting the league with incredible throws from inside and outside the pocket.
For too long, Mahomes' numbers and the Chiefs offense have fallen flat. Year after year, it's become a struggle to score 25-plus points consistently. Andy Reid deserves a major piece of the blame pie, but Mahomes himself needs to return to his best form.
