Chiefs One Step Closer to Trading for Ex-Bills Star Before Deadline
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs have an obvious need at cornerback after another injury during Sunday's Week 8 win over the Raiders. With Jaylen Watson and now Nazeeh Johnson ailing, it'd be wise for general manager Brett Veach to secure some insurance.
There's one intriguing option with proven experience who could help, as former All-Pro CB Tre'Davious White was given permission by the Rams to seek a trade. He wants to join a true contender and few teams are a better fit than the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.
White is already familiar to Chiefs fans, given he was part of the Bills trade that landed Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. This could be the perfect way to come full circle years later as the legendary QB looks for his fourth ring.
Chiefs Have Opportunity to Trade for Rams CB Tre'Davious White
Head coach Sean McVay told reporters that White and his agent have permission to explore a trade. He's only appeared in four games this season after posting the same number last year but if he's healthy, then White represents a clear upgrade at a position of need for Kansas City.
A star with the Bills early in his career, White was an All-Pro in 2019 and 2020 with 28 deflected passes and nine interceptions during that stretch. Putting him alongside Trent McDuffie in Steve Spagnuolo's scheme could pay dividends, helping alleviate the respective losses, however temporary, of Watson and Johnson.
It's likely White could be had at a minimal cost given his limited production of late. He's a pending free agent and wouldn't require any commitment, so the Chiefs could quickly part ways if things didn't work out.
Considering how barren the cornerback market is right now, taking a swing on a guy like White makes a ton of sense for both sides.
