The Kansas City Chiefs have obvious concerns when it comes to reliable targets for Patrick Mahomes. Travis Kelce has been slowed down by Father Time and isn't committing beyond the 2025 season. Knowing the importance that Brett Veach and Andy Reid have placed on the tight end's leadership and legendary production, there is zero chance he ever wears another uniform. If Kelce wants to continue playing, it will be in a Chiefs' uniform. With that said, fans can't help but notice the lack of extension and consistent retirement rumblings.

Kelce has a well-covered off-the-field life that has opened up endless opportunities once he does decide to call it quits. When that does happen, it will become glaring just how obvious Kelce's GOAT case is as the best to ever play the position. Still, the idea of the legend walking away brings up obvious concerns, with one of the obvious fallouts being looking for a potential replacement. While you're never going to find another Kelce, there is one potential fit that is looking more enticing after Week 1 action.

The Chiefs Need to Monitor David Njoku as Future Travis Kelce Replacement

Njoku has offered consistent production throughout his career, but Sunday's action showed off how dominating the tight end could be if put in the right system. Totaling only 37 yards is far from impressive, but this is closer to a 100-yard game when you're playing with Joe Flacco and a limited Cleveland offense. What makes Njoku so exciting is the fact that he is a walking mismatch. The pass catcher's massive frame is perfect for the style of Patrick Mahomes.

Importantly, Njoku is a name often floated in trade rumors and is on a Browns team that should be sellers at the trade deadline. Beyond that, he's also set to be a free agent next offseason.

While Noah Gray remains under contract, it is easy to argue the Chiefs should consider making a move on Njoku soon, rather than waiting to see how the rest of 2025 goes for Kelce. With Rashee Rice, Jalen Royals, and Xavier Worthy all on the shelf it makes sense to bring in Njoku in a trade with a clearly tanking Browns team.

If the Browns are willing to deal, it could make sense to go ahead and pull the trigger. This further protects Kelce, allowing the legend to save his best moments for the end of the season and inevitable playoff run. Regardless, Njoku should expect to garner interest for the league's prestige organization sometime over the next year. There simply is far too clear a fit to ignore.
