As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare to defend their AFC Championship for a third straight season, fans have every reason for continued belief in this core. However, if there was one notable concern, it is the lack of pass-catching depth. Patrick Mahomes is elite at elevating talent, and the Chiefs have continually asked the quarterback to make it work since Tyreek Hill's departure. Yes, Travis Kelce has been a consistent presence, but he is clearly aging, needing to scale back his role in the offense, saving his best for when it matters most.
With this in mind, the Chiefs would be wise to continue to monitor the receiver market. If Rashee Rice is going to be on the field, the Chiefs have their primary target and plenty of reason for confidence. The issue with this is the fact that Rice is coming off a serious injury as well as facing off-the-field concerns that could cause a potential suspension. All of this adds up to the Chiefs looking at outside-the-box options.
Gabe Davis Would Be a Perfect Upside Depth Signing for the Chiefs
The Jacksonville Jaguars released Gabe Davis after one frustrating season. Kansas City fans will remember Davis from his time with the Bills. It is a perfect reclamation project that doesn't require risk from the Kansas City front office. Davis is an improved depth or a potential starting option if injuries or suspensions get in the way of the current lineup.
Davis is a proven deep threat that Patrick Mahomes has made it clear he wants more of in the Kansas City offense. While Xavier Worthy has shown flashes of being this needed threat, the consistency isn't there as of yet for the young speedster.
This is all the more reason to sign Davis and give the veteran receiver a chance to revive a struggling career. Having played with the second-best quarterback in the league, the veteran showed how valuable he can be. It is at least worth a look for a Kansas City team that badly needs to improve their depth at the receiver position.
