The Kansas City Chiefs are a step beyond desperation time after a 20-10 loss to the Houston Texans appeared to seal their postseason fate. Sitting at 6-7 on the year, the Chiefs would need to win out and get incredible help, needing at least two teams in front of them to collapse completely. With this in mind, it seems the Chiefs are destined to miss the playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era, inviting clear change. The first move should be parting ways with Matt Nagy, opening up the chance to bring back a familiar face.
Eric Bieniemy parted ways with the Chiefs at the end of the 2022 season in an effort to generate more head coaching interest. This has clearly backfired, with the coordinator already on his second job, currently serving a role as the Chicago Bears' running backs coach. All of this paints a clear picture that the Chiefs and Bieniemy are perfectly set up for a needed reunion after a 2025 season full of frustrations.
Bieniemy has often been pointed to as the needed balance to Andy Reid's player-friendly approach. The former offensive coordinator is unafraid to push his players and demand improvement, calling out anyone who he believes has something left in the tank. It doesn't matter if you're Patrick Mahomes or the final player on the roster, Bieniemy is going to give you the same intensity and demand improvement.
Chiefs Must Bring Back Former Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy After Latest Setback
With this in mind, Sunday's loss should set up Nagy's exit and make sure the Chiefs chase a proven replacement. Bringing back the former coordinator, you understand the change that you're making and the improvement that it will bring to the current roster. No matter how the rest of the season plays out, Nagy has to go, and it should be a familiar face that is his replacement.
Bieniemy invites the type of changes you need to make and does so at a low cost. Even though Chicago has been a great landing spot, it is hard to see the veteran coordinator turning down an opportunity for a promotion that allows him to once again work with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.
Chances at a head coaching role have dried up, leaving the door now open for a reunion. This is likely more enticing for Bieniemy than the Chiefs have fallen on their face and are searching for answers. It gives the coach a chance to step back in and help keep the dynasty alive after a dumpster fire of a 2025 season. Regardless of the reasoning, it is clear that the Chiefs must bring Bieniemy back and part ways with a coordinator in Nagy who has overstayed his welcome.
