Chiefs must act fast if they want to sign a former All-Pro receiver

Stefon Diggs remains on the open market but teams are closing in.

The Kansas City Chiefs desperately need help for the passing game heading into the 2026 season. Patrick Mahomes can only do so much on his own, and even if they rely more on the running game and Kenneth Walker III, the lack of outside weapons might come back to haunt them as it did in 2025.

Of course, that doesn't mean they should sign someone just for the sake of it. A perfect example of this is that Brett Veach should want no part of a Tyreek Hill reunion, as he's yet to be medically cleared to play, not to mention he is entering his age-32 season and might not have it in him anymore.

Kansas City should, however, turn its sights to another former All-Pro pass-catcher. Stefon Diggs is still available, and he's probably the biggest name up for grabs. That may not be the case for much longer, though, as rumors are growing that he might join his hometown Washington Commanders soon, forcing the Chiefs to act fast.

The Chiefs better strike quickly in the Stefon Diggs sweepstakes before he opts to play in his hometown

The former New England Patriots wideout recently confirmed that he's 'figuring things out' when it comes to potentially signing with the Commanders. As a Maryland native, a homecoming for the final stretch of his career might make perfect sense.

That said, he'd probably delay his return if the Chiefs pick up the phone. Diggs has been on the losing end of multiple playoff battles with Andy Reid's team, and getting to play for them for a change would certainly give him a better shot at a Super Bowl.

The Commanders may not be a playoff-caliber outfit, not even with him. And as promising as young stud QB Jayden Daniels might be, Patrick Mahomes is still on a tier of his own, and Diggs would without a doubt appreciate having the opportunity to catch passes from him.

The Chiefs can't afford to roll into next season with their current wide receiver corps. Xavier Worthy may never live up to the hype as a former first-round pick, and there are no guarantees that Rashee Rice will stay out of trouble or be healthy. Tyquan Thornton is a big-play specialist and not much more, and the Chiefs are without any other proven or reliable weapons in that room.

That wouldn't be much of a problem if this were any time before the 2023 season, but Travis Kelce is entering his age-37 season, and expecting him to top 1,000 yards in his 14th year in the league simply isn't realistic.

The Chiefs can't rely solely on a young defense and their ACL-rehabbing quarterback to get back to the mountaintop. And even if he's no longer in his prime, making a run at Diggs might be the difference between a catch here or there that decides a postseason game.
