Chiefs' lack of blue-chip talent is teams biggest weakness heading into 2026

For the first time in years, the Kansas City Chiefs lack multiple top-shelf talents on both sides of the ball heading into the 2026 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a clear weakness heading into the 2026 season, and that is a lack of proven top-shelf talent. The departures in the secondary and lack of splashy additions have made it clear that when it comes to elite stars, the Chiefs don't have the advantage that other Super Bowl contenders might boast. Patrick Mahomes can help offset much of this as the league's best quarterback and a clear blue-chip talent; however, after him is where the clear and established elite talent begins to drop off.

Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith both deserve a place in this conversation, but the offensive line remains a question due to unknowns on the outside. Travis Kelce and Chris Jones would be the final two examples, but both are coming off underwhelming seasons by their once lofty standards and facing questions about whether or not Father Time is starting to win.

The point here is that while the Chiefs have a lot of great pieces, the franchise lacks the clear, established stars it has had in years past. This was further evidenced by the Los Angeles Rams' blockbuster addition of Myles Garrett, giving LA an elite group that includes Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.

Chiefs lack of top shelf talent clear concern as 2026 season nears

It's important to note that as long as Andy Reid and Mahomes are paired, the expectation should remain an AFC Championship berth. This has been the floor of the team every time that Mahomes has finished a season healthy in his career. Still, there is no denying the number of hypotheticals the franchise is relying on when it comes to producing.

The secondary, pass-rush, receiver room, and offensive line depth are all areas that the Chiefs are relying on unproven pieces. This is especially the case after Rashee Rice has had another setback in the 2026 offseason and left his and the position's future very much in question. All of this makes it clear that the Chiefs are relying on a lot more hope than they have in years past.

While this can work out in Kansas City's favor with the elite development that Reid, Eric Bieniemy, and Steve Spagnuolo have proven to offer, there is no denying it doesn't offer the advantage of simply having a roster loaded with established stars. This is something that KC could boast in seasons past, but they have moved on and are attempting to reset their timeline of contention.

This requires developing young players and exercising a sense of patience that will be tested early in the 2026 season. Fans can only hope that it plays out as expected and Kansas City's lack of star power doesn't come back to bite the franchise.
