The Kansas City Chiefs will look to get back to the top of the NFL after falling in Super Bowl LIX. The 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was stunning and the Chiefs head into an offseason with an uncertain future for one of its top playmakers and several free agents who could leave for greener pastures.

But while there’s sure to be a lot of movement from Kansas City, the Chiefs will also be bringing many players in. In the case of one player, it could be an unexpected reunion after he was released by his current team on Friday.

Chiefs Could Reunite With Kendall Fuller After Surprise Release

The Miami Dolphins released cornerback Kendall Fuller in a string of moves on Friday. Fuller broke into the league with the Washington Commanders but was traded to the Chiefs as part of the Alex Smith trade in 2018. He spent two seasons with Kansas City, recording two interceptions in 26 games before heading back to Washington in free agency before the 2020 season.

Over the next four seasons, Fuller snatched 10 interceptions, including running back two for touchdowns during the 2022 season before signing with Miami last offseason. After failing to record an interception in 11 games, Fuller is now a free agent.

Fuller’s release is surprising in that he was still effective for the Dolphins last season. His 62.4 coverage grade was 63rd among 128 qualifying cornerbacks, and he allowed 27 receptions on 43 targets (62.8%) for 316 yards and a touchdown with five pass breakups, according to Pro Football Focus.

At age 30, Fuller can still be a serviceable cornerback, which is something the Chiefs need this offseason. Trent McDuffie is the Chiefs’ top corner but allowed six touchdowns with 11 penalties last season. The spot on the other side of the field was a carousel as Jaylen Watson suffered a broken ankle in October, and Nazeeh Johnson struggled mightily, allowing a 108.0 passer rating on 51 targets.

Kansas City could still target a cornerback in the draft, but Fuller would be a starting-caliber player. He’s not the corner he was during his shutdown years in Washington, but he can bring some depth to a position that needs it.
