The Kansas City Chiefs weren't able to make history and 3-peat as Super Bowl champions. That's a feat that no one has been able to accomplish and the attention has changed to the offseason.
The Chiefs have some holes on the roster that need to be filled but the biggest storyline is around the future of tight end Travis Kelce.
NFL insider James Palmer said that he's hearing members of the Chiefs organization believe that Kelce will step away from the game this offseason.
Meanwhile, defensive end Charles Omenihu made a pitch for Kelce to return to Kansas City in 2025.
With this being a massive question mark for the Chiefs, it's been reported that they have given Kelce a deadline to make a decision.
According to Nate Taylor and Cale Clinton of the Athletic, Kansas City would like a decision to be made around March 14.
They wrote, "The Kansas City Chiefs are hoping Travis Kelce, their star tight end, decides to remain with the team for the 2025 season, which could be the last in his illustrious career. If Kelce chooses to retire, the Chiefs, as they head into an intriguing offseason, want to know of his decision around March 14, according to a team source. Based on the deadline, the Chiefs are going to give Kelce a month to decide his future."
This timeline isn't surprising. The 2025 league year officially begins on March 12th at 3 p.m. CST. It's obvious why Kansas City would want a decision made by then. Kelce is on the books for $19.8 million for the 2025 season with an $11.5 million roster bonus that is due on March 15.
The Chiefs wouldn't want to shell out that kind of money for a player that won't be around.
The 35-year-old looked a step slower this year, posting career-lows in receiving yards (823) and receiving touchdowns (3). Kelce has also expressed that the Chiefs playoff runs for the past seven years have taken a toll on his body during an episode of his “New Heights” podcast.
He said, "That process can be grueling. It can weigh on you. It can make you better and it could drive you crazy at the same time. Right now, it’s one of those things where it was kind of driving me crazy this year, and I think that it happens as you tail off toward the back nine of your career, as (Scott Van Pelt) would say."
Kelce will be having some tough conversations over the next couple of weeks, but the Chiefs have given him a deadline to come up with a decision.
