Chiefs Have No One to Blame But Andy Reid if OC Search Ends Poorly

As much credit as Andy Reid deserves, he also needs to be held accountable if the Chiefs can't find a suitable OC.

The only silver lining after such a terrible season was the thought or promise of change. The Kansas City Chiefs clearly need to address several issues on the roster and the coaching staff, and keeping everybody in town is the opposite of what they should be doing right now.

Nevertheless, it seems like the status quo in Missouri. Even with Matt Nagy's contract running its course and him being a head coaching candidate for multiple teams, the Chiefs have yet to interview a single candidate for the offensive coordinator job, at least on the record. That only spells trouble, and it's all on Andy Reid.

Andy Reid's Stubbornness Could Cost the Chiefs in the Offseason

Only a handful of teams are still in contention. Of the teams still in the race, only one or maybe two might be in the market for a new head coach or offensive coordinator. As such, most of the candidates for the job should be available now.

The fact that Reid and the Chiefs haven't interviewed anyone for the job could mean several things, none of which would be good news for Kansas City fans.

  • They might think that Nagy won't land a head coaching job, which would lead him to come back.
  • They may also have an agreement of sorts with a former assistant coach, like Eric Bieniemy.
  • They could want to promote someone from the coaching staff, such as QB coach David Girardi
  • Finally, they might just be sleeping on their laurels while everybody else is trying to get better.

Whatever the case, none of those avenues leads to a shakeup, and that is what this team badly needs entering 2026. Nagy has left plenty to be desired and has been a focal point of criticism for years now, and just moving on from the wide receivers coach won't be enough to turn things around with him at the helm.

Bringing Bieniemy back might be the best scenario here. While he struggled mightily as a play-caller after leaving the Chiefs, his no-bull and tough-love approach might be what this team needs to have some accountability on offense. Also, he's familiar with the system, and he brought the best out of Patrick Mahomes. Then again, it would all go back to Andy Reid, who will most likely keep calling plays.

Promoting someone in-house, like Girardi, or another option, makes sense to a degree. Even if he's earned his stripes, though, it would, once again, be the opposite of bringing a fresh perspective into the mix. Continuity isn't always a good thing, and it's the last thing this team needs after years of just hoping that Mahomes can work his magic until a receiver finds their way open.

The Chiefs aren't as bad as their record shows, but they're no longer the team to beat in the league. They must stop banking on past glories, as the rest of the league has adapted, adjusted, and may have caught up to them.

Andy Reid is a future Hall of Famer and one of the greatest head coaches in NFL history. That being said, he can't do it all on his own, and his reluctance to change things may doom him again, just like it did in Philadelphia.
