Chiefs dodged a bullet by passing on A.J. Brown trade

The option to pass on star receiver AJ Brown may have been easier than previously thought for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs were consistently pointed to as a potential landing spot for star receiver A.J. Brown before the receiver was officially dealt to the New England Patriots. It is a move that was a long time coming for a player who has been consistently rumored to be on his way out of Philadelphia after consistent drama. While the Chiefs clearly need another option at the position, there is no question that the franchise dodged a bullet by not adding a player who has proven to be focused on his own accomplishments.

Kansas City has been at its best when having a team willing to embrace whatever role it takes to win. Brown isn't this player as he seems to be more concerned with a large volume of targets than just winning. This is a lesson that New England is going to quickly learn, and why the Chiefs shouldn't second-guess the fact that they didn't land the star receiver.

This isn't to question the Chiefs' need to make a further move at the position, but to point out the reality of a player who has proven to be focused on personal accomplishments above the team. Whether it was throwing Jalen Hurts under the bus, making headlines with odd media answers, or reading a book on the sidelines, the one thing you can rely on from A.J. Brown is the receiver making it about himself.

Chiefs were wise to avoid A.J. Brown trade with star receiver bringing obvious risk

It's important to note here that in no way is this to deny Brown's incredible talent or the great plays the pass catcher is capable of routinely making. However, what the Chiefs need is receiver depth and a cohesive group that is going to make smart decisions and be willing to embrace whatever role gives KC the best chance to win any given week.

Already, the Chiefs have a frustrating receiver to deal with, as Rashee Rice has continued to make poor off-the-field decisions and put himself in harm's way. This is more than enough of a distraction and frustration at a position that needs a bit of stability, not the answer that Brown would bring.

With this in mind, fans should be relieved that Kansas City opted not to spend what it took to beat out New England's offer and are content looking at current options as well as potential free agent signings. Brown simply doesn't fit what the Chiefs are building, and would have been a risk there wasn't enough reason to take.
