Chiefs Dealt Bad News on Free Agent Reunion Right After SB Loss
By Chris Schad
The Kansas City Chiefs will enter an important offseason after falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. With several key free agents that could leave, the Chiefs must decide which ones are keeping around and which ones could be better served elsewhere. But there are also players that could be worth keeping around as they look to reclaim that title in 2025.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs received some bad news as they began their foray into free agency this month and it may alter at least one of their plans as they head into the offseason.
Chiefs Lose Free Agent kicker Matthew Wright to the Panthers
According to The Athletic’s Joe Person, the Carolina Panthers have signed Matthew Wright to a future/reserve deal. Wright bounced around with three different teams including the Chiefs last season but made 15-of-16 field goals with a long of 50 yards.
The Chiefs are good at the kicker position as Harrison Butker made 21-of-25 field goals and had a long of 53 yards despite missing four games with a knee injury. When Butker was on the shelf, Wright took over, knocking down 8-of-9 field goal attempts and both extra point tries.
Butker signed a four-year, $25.6 million contract extension last summer and the deal runs through 2028. But he didn’t show any signs of slowing down, which made Wright expendable.
With $11.5 million in cap space, the Chiefs may have to make a difficult decision or two to improve the team heading into next season. Butker never was a player on the chopping block however and the Chiefs will turn their attention to more prominent free agents in the coming weeks.
