All offseason, I have been mocking wide receivers to the Chiefs on Day Two of the draft, specifically at pick 95, which is where I think they can get the most value. Today is the day, and with only three WRs (not including Travis Hunter) going in round one, there will be a lot of talent available for Kansas City to bolster the offense today.
Earlier this offseason, I made a list of seven wide receivers the Chiefs need to consider on draft day. Now that day one has passed, all seven of the guys I listed are still on the board for Kansas City, and several options could be targets for them as early as pick 63.
The seven listed receivers were Luther Burden, Jayden Higgins, Tai Felton, Elic Ayomanor, Isiah Neyor, Savion Williams, and Donte Thornton. While Thornton is most likely a Day Three option, I think there is a very high likelihood we will hear one of these names called for the Chiefs on Friday. I would like to see Kansas City try to move down from either pick 63 or 66 and attack one of these receivers in the third round if they fall.
My favorite of these names is Tai Felton, who you have all heard of if you have read anything I've put out over the past month. Here is what I said about Tai a little over a month ago...
"Tai Felton is at the very top of the “my guys” list in this year's draft, and I would be over the moon if he was in a Chiefs jersey next season. Felton was one of the most productive receivers in the BIG 10 last season where he put up over 600 yards in his first four games. He also had just shy of 100 receptions this season and found ways to get open from a variety of spots with a large route tree.Matt Chabot
Coming into this year, Felton was viewed as a late Day 3 guy, but after his incredible season, his stock has skyrocketed. Felton then went to the Senior Bowl and the combine where he continued to boost his draft stock. Felton ran a 4.37 40-yard dash and displayed great burst in his broad and vertical jump. The Chiefs need a receiver who can do it all, Felton's athletic ability and ability to get open, make him one of the most underrated players in the draft, and would be a great Day-Two addition for the Chiefs. "
Felton is my fourth-ranked receiver in the draft, followed by Elic Ayomanor, Jayden Higgins, and then Savion Williams in that order. All four guys project as great outside receivers, but Felton's grindy (Mark Canha adjective for my Royals fans out there) mentality, work ethic, and ability to do it all is what sets him apart from the rest.
The Chiefs have missed on some receivers in the past, with guys like Skyy Moore, Cornell Powell, and Mecole Hardman not really reaching the potential fans had hoped to see. This year, they have a chance to make that right, and in a class that may not have a ton of elite talent at receiver, there is plenty of depth.
We know Brett Veach will get aggressive, and he will go get the receiver he wants. While I am certainly okay with any of these guys, Felton is at the top of the list. Kansas City will need to bolster its receiver room and give Patrick Mahomes and the offense more options. Today is the day to do so. I look forward to seeing what name gets called as the next great wide receiver in Kansas City
