The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the greatest, if not the greatest, tight ends to ever live. However, as great as Travis Kelce is, he's not getting any younger, and barring a shocking turn of events, this will be his final season.
General manager Brett Veach has almost entirely ignored this team's need for offensive weapons. Kenneth Walker III was a strong addition, but Patrick Mahomes also needs more pass catchers by his side.
Considering that, FanSided's Jake Beckman believes the Chiefs should make a run at Kyle Pitts, who just signed his franchise tag with the Atlanta Falcons. It won't be easy or cheap, but it certainly makes perfect sense.
The Kansas City Chiefs should trade for Kyle Pitts
"Trading for a guy like Kyle Pitts would not only give them a tight end of the future (Pitts is only 25 years old), but it would also give them another pass catcher this year," Beckman argued.
As things stand now, the Chiefs only have Kelce, Noah Gray, and Jared Wiley. That's far from ideal, especially considering that Rashee Rice might not be healthy/eligible, and Xavier Worthy is also dealing with an undisclosed injury.
The Chiefs could also use another big-bodied blocker at the line of scrimmage to create more running lanes for Walker. Pitts is an elite blocker, and even though he's clearly an athletic freak who's better suited as a pass-catching menace, having him out there gives the Chiefs another blocker to protect Patrick Mahomes as well.
For years, the Chiefs kept opposing defenses in hell with Kelce roaming free in the open field. Of course, his ability to improvise and go off the script to find lanes to add yards after the catch is second to none, but now that Eric Bieniemy is back, he could also get creative with a weapon like Pitts.
The Falcons want to keep Pitts, but the fact that they didn't give him a long-term contract extension also leaves the door open for a tag-and-trade situation. If the Chiefs are willing to meet their asking price, which they should, they could land the highest-drafted tight end in NFL history.
Granted, Pitts hasn't always lived up to the hype, but plenty of that had to do with the way he was being used. He's still young and has his prime years ahead, and Mahomes has already shown what he can do with a star tight end by his side. The Chiefs need to do right by their quarterback, and the right guy is out there for the taking.
