The Kansas City Chiefs couldn't keep their foot on the gas last season. They ran out of luck in close games, and their lack of weapons on offense took a toll on Patrick Mahomes' ability to lead this team the distance.
Then, what was already a disastrous season turned into an actual catastrophe when Mahomes suffered torn ACL and LCL injuries. Given how late in the season he got hurt, having him on the field for the start of the season sounded unlikely.
However, Mahomes has proven, again, that he's not built like everyone else. In a now-viral clip, the Chiefs' quarterback looked as smooth and mobile as ever, and it seems that a Week 1 return shouldn't be off the table.

Unlike most injured athletes, Mahomes didn't delay his surgery. He went under the knife almost immediately, and he's taken an uber-aggressive approach to his recovery. From taking Chiefs staffers with him when he travels to working out tirelessly, this is yet another example of his relentless work ethic and determination to be the best of the best.
That's yet another reason why Rashee Rice's poor life choices are so frustrating. Mahomes is making otherworldly efforts to get back on the field for Week 1, yet his primary pass catcher, who, mind you, is entering a contract year, can't stay out of trouble.
The Chiefs are entering a pivotal season in franchise history. All signs point to this being Travis Kelce's final campaign in the league, and another failed postseason trip might even cost head coach Andy Reid his job.
Mahomes is well aware of everything that's at stake. He knows how much his team depends on him to get back to the promised land, and he'll leave no stone unturned in his pursuit of glory. He wants to play in the season opener, and judging by that clip, he could actually pad up and get on the gridiron today.
Of course, the Chiefs must be extremely cautious with their best player. Mahomes wants to play through injury, but they have to make sure he's 100 percent back to full strength before giving him the green light. KC has to take a big-picture approach, as Mahomes is just entering his physical prime.
He might not be as mobile early on in the season, so pass-protection will be crucial to keep him out of harm's way. Moreover, Mahomes also has to understand that he can only push his body so much and can't take unnecessary risks or hits.
Mahomes is a relentless competitor, but he's hurt. He's heard all the outside noise and knows 31 fan bases are rooting for the Chiefs' downfall. That's why he'll do whatever it takes to prove them wrong and wipe those smiles off their faces again.
