Chiefs vs. Broncos Rapid Reaction: KC Survives Despite Patrick Mahomes Struggles
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs were dead. Then they weren't.
With the Broncos on the verge of ending their rival's perfect season, Mike Danna blocked Will Lutz's 35-yard field goal attempt as the game ended, giving Kansas City a critical victory despite a sloppy performance. Patrick Mahomes seemed hampered by his ankle injury and struggled but when it mattered, his teammates picked up the slack.
There is a lot to work on given the disastrous left tackle performance. With a Sunday Night Football showdown against the Bills waiting in Week 11, the Chiefs are lucky to have won. They survived, yet this effort will lose almost every other game if they don't turn things around.
Chiefs Survive Against Broncos Despite Sloppy Performance
By no measure was this a good effort, especially from the offense. Mahomes had his second straight game without an interception, but he missed Xavier Worthy on a deep TD and strangely overthrew Travis Kelce on Kansas City's final drive. Overall, he left a pair of scores on the board that should've cost the Chiefs dearly.
Steve Spagnuolo's defense and Dave Toub's special teams unit both stepped up in a major way. Denver scored 14 points in the second quarter but was shutout in the second half. Bo Nix calmly led his offense down the field on the final drive, exposing Trent McDuffie repeatedly in a shocking development, though Danna's heroics saved the day.
The Chiefs have now won nine consecutive games in which they trailed in the second half. Somehow, some way, they always come through in the biggest moments.
It won't be so easy next week against Josh Allen and the Bills. Mahomes has to be better. Hopefully with another weak of rest, his ankle will be better. If the injury lingers, Kansas City could easily lose its first game of the season.
For now, we celebrate and breathe a collective sigh of relief. The Chiefs won a game they absolutely should've lost, but all that matters is the final score. There are a lot of areas to fix, though it was incredible to see special teams deliver.
When their backs are against the wall, the Chiefs rise to the occasion. It wasn't pretty, yet they're still 9-0 and now onto Buffalo.
