Chiefs Must Reunite With SB Starter After Disastrous Week 10 Performance
By Joe Summers
Brett Veach and the Chiefs might have no choice but to bring back a starter from last year's Super Bowl team after the concerning injury to LT Wanya Morris early in Week 10 against the Broncos.
Rookie Kingsley Suamataia filled in for Morris but was an unmitigated disaster. He was beat on seemingly every play, typically requiring a double team to slow Denver's defensive line down at all.
Despite Morris' struggles, he's clearly better than Suamataia, who simply can't be the starter moving forward. If Morris' injury is serious, it's time for Veach to give Donovan Smith a call.
Chiefs Must Reunite With Donovan Smith After Kingsley Suamataia's Struggles
Suamataia had so much trouble that fans were begging for LG Joe Thuney to take his place. Morris ultimately returned in the third quarter, though it's still obvious that Kansas City needs a better backup plan should he get hurt again.
It's far too early to call Suamataia a bust. He was always considered more of a long-term answer who needed time to develop. That said, it's hard to feel good about his performance so far in his rookie campaign.
Smith is a proven, reliable option who remains a free agent. He started in the Super Bowl last year and given the importance of this season's playoff push, he's worth adding to the roster. The Chiefs could sign him on the cheap and either start him or leave him as Morris' backup.
Either way, Suamataia shouldn't be in the team's plans for the rest of the season. He has plenty of time to become a good starter, though it's obvious he still needs to work with offensive line coach Andy Heck.
Morris' injury is a problem but it doesn't need to derail the season. Smith would give the team some much-needed insurance, so the ball is now in Veach's court.
