The Kansas City Chiefs are one of five teams that are hosting their mandatory minicamps this week. For the Chiefs, it's a fantastic opportunity for the coaches to work with the 90-man roster before the action ramps up next month at training camp.

At the same time, mandatory minicamp allows for teams to bring in guys for a tryout to see if they are worth signing right now or bringing back later this summer. The Chiefs aren’t afraid to make changes to the 90-man roster, especially if they see a player they like and believe he can compete for a spot on the 53-man roster or practice squad.

On Tuesday, Kansas City reportedly hosted four players for a tryout, including a familiar name who was with the club last year.

According to Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride, tight end Geor’Quarius Spivey was among the tryout players at minicamp. Spivey was actually with the Chiefs last summer as they signed him following a workout in August.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end went undrafted following the 2024 NFL Draft. Spivey played his college football at Mississippi State and TCU. Over his four years in college, he racked up 28 receptions for 298 yards and a touchdown.

The young tight end missed the entire 2023 season after the NCAA ruled him ineligible after transferring to TCU (his second transfer). At the time of the NCAA’s ruling, Spivey made it clear that he followed the direction of the NCAA and his academic advisor.

Despite a lost season in 2023, Spivey still found his way onto the Chiefs’ 90-man roster, where he appeared in all three preseason games. He only had one reception for seven yards. Kansas City ultimately parted ways with Spivey ahead of the 53-man roster deadline.

However, Spivey did not stop pursuing his football dreams as he took his talents to the UFL this year. The spring football league provided Spivey with much-needed reps that he would not have received if he had been on a practice squad.

With the Roughnecks this season, Spivey had seven receptions for 65 yards in nine games (four starts). Even though he didn’t make a huge dent in the passing game, having those reps and film likely helped him get back on Kansas City’s radar.

The Chiefs’ TE room is currently stacked with several players. That said, we'll see if Spivey did enough in his workout to push his way onto the 90-man roster.
