The Chiefs made a surprise roster move late Thursday afternoon, reportedly signing TE Geor'Quarius Spivey following a successful workout.

Spivey is a former teammate of fourth-round pick Jared Wiley at TCU, though is most known for a controversial decision by the NCAA that ruled him ineligible for the entire 2023 season despite Spivey's insistence that he followed the explicit instructions of his academic advisor and NCAA.

He caught only 28 passes for 298 yards and one TD over four collegiate seasons but Kansas City clearly saw enough potential to bring Spivey in for the remainder of training camp after a slew of injuries this week.

With a number of players going down to injury at practice, the Chiefs had extra spots to work with and liked what they saw in Spivey. Brett Veach is a disciple of the 'no stone left unturned' philosophy with talent and couldn't resist the opportunity to add an overlooked potential contributor.

It's hard to imagine how Spivey fits with the team immediately given the tight end room already includes Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, Irv Smith Jr., and Wiley. That being said, Spivey could turn into a developmental practice squad player if he impresses over the next few weeks.

After starting his career at Mississippi State, Spivey transferred to TCU for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He saw limited playing time due to Wiley's presence but at six-foot-five and 240-pounds, Spivey has the prerequisite size to theoretically fill the Blake Bell blocking role while providing the occasional pass-catching threat.

In all likelihood, this acquisition won't have any significant impact on the team in 2024 or beyond. That doesn't mean Spivey isn't worth throwing a dart, and the Chiefs intend to find out if the rest of the NFL accidentally slept on a hidden gem.
