Chiefs Break Bad News to Recent Arrival About Week 15 Plans
On Monday, the Chiefs signed cornerback Steven Nelson out of retirement. This move was made after Joshua Williams suffered an injury on Sunday night in the victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Williams wasn't listed with an injury designation, meaning he is expected to practice in some capacity this week.
Despite that, Nelson's addition immediately comes with the question of when will he play. Andy Reid addressed this during his Wednesday press conference saying, "Steven Nelson won't play on Sunday," per ESPN's Adam Teicher.
Chiefs News: Steven Nelson Won't Play Against the Browns
Kansas City had a similar scenario play out when they signed left tackle D.J. Humphries. However, the main difference was Humphries was signed on a Friday, giving him no time to prepare for that week's game.
Humphries didn't suit up the next week either because he was still getting back into the swing of things after being sidelined by an ACL injury most of the year. The veteran offensive lineman made his Chiefs' debut in Week 14, starting at left tackle over Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamatia.
Nelson's scenario is slightly different since he's not coming off an injury but being cautious is still the correct play.
Last season, Nelson recorded 63 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and five interceptions with the Houston Texans. One of his interceptions occurred in the Texans' playoff game against the Cleveland Browns, where he returned it for a touchdown.
Nelson was drafted by the Chiefs in 2015 but he has never played under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Seeing how Spagnuolo will utilize the 31-year-old Nelson will certainly be interesting.
When Nelson is activated he must be able to elevate the cornerback room to some extent. If he's unable to do this, the Chiefs' defense may struggle in the playoffs.
