Chiefs Announce Big Patrick Mahomes News Before Friday Game
By Joe Summers
Patrick Mahomes' list of accolades is long just for his on-field efforts, but he's now a finalist for the NFL's Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award as well.
He was named the Chiefs' representative for the prestigious award, which recognizes outstanding sportsmanship on the playing field. It was established in 2015 and no Chief has ever won.
Mahomes has a great chance to become the first. Fellow NFL players vote on the finalists, and his popularity gives Mahomes a potential leg up on the competition.
Patrick Mahomes Named Finalist for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award
Bobby Wagner of the Seattle Seahawks won the award in 2023. Charles Woodson in 2015 is the only player in the AFC West to have won, so Mahomes could accomplish something that no Bronco or Charger ever has.
This wouldn't be the first time. Mahomes is a known trash-talker on the field, though his off-field charitable work and support of the local community are defining characteristics of the three-time Super Bowl MVP.
There are many deserving players nominated on this list. Maxx Crosby received the nomination for the Raiders, Jonathan Cooper for the Broncos, and Khalil Mack for the Chargers. Along with the award, the winner receives a $25,000 donation to the charity of his choice.
The award is presented each year to an NFL player who demonstrates "great sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for opponents, and integrity in competition."
Kansas City is well aware of how special Mahomes is both as a player and as a person. This nomination proves he's respected in a variety of ways, and hopefully it'll just be another addition to his exceedingly large trophy case.
