Brett Veach can't afford to chase the name on jersey of this former first-round pick

Chiefs should steer clear from Brandon Aiyuk amid ongoing tensions.

The Kansas City Chiefs don't seem too quick to act when it comes to adding help at wide receiver. And while there's an argument that, as currently constituted, that room looks pretty good with a healthy Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton, along with young ascending talents Cyrus Allen and Jalen Royals, some fans would say the Chiefs should feel a tad desperate to add a proven veteran. And sometimes, desperate teams make big-time moves that seemingly always come back to bite them.

Rice is out of jail, which is, admittedly, a crazy sentence to write after his 30-day sentence. He will have a little over a month to continue his recovery, ramp things up, and get back on the field for training camp. Once that happens, even if he's healthy -- which is a big 'if' -- this team might come to realize that they just don't have enough at wide receiver.

Incidentally, the San Francisco 49ers might part ways with Brandon Aiyuk, according to NFL insider Jason La Canfora. If that happens, the Chiefs could consider making a run at him, but that may lead to a disaster.

The Chiefs should cross Brandon Aiyuk off of potential free agent fits

"The 49ers cancelled their recent mandatory mini camp, which would have brought the situation to a head, but there is every expectation now that he will be released before the start of training camp," wrote La Canfora.

Aiyuk has been a thorn in the 49ers' side for years now. It all started when he forced their hand to give him a big-money deal, and it only got worse after he got hurt. Even last week, he called the front office 'dumb' for giving him a huge chunk of change and posed in a Washington Commanders' hat.

Given his ties to Jayden Daniels, his former quarterback and friend in college, the Commanders look like a no-brainer destination. That said, Washington is reportedly keeping tabs on Stefon Diggs, who might be a safer bet at this point.

That might leave multiple desperate teams talking themselves into signing Aiyuk, including the Chiefs. That's a luxury this team cannot afford. If anything, they want players who won't be a distraction, which hasn't been a problem while employing Rashee Rice.

Of course, the Chiefs will probably have to do something to help Patrick Mahomes, and not exploring all of their options would be irresponsible. From that to signing one of the biggest headaches in professional football, however, might be a massive stretch.

The Chiefs will probably also consider signing Tyreek Hill if he's finally back to full strength closer to training camp, which would also be a problem. They've put themselves in this position by not addressing the situation when they could've.

This team spent most of its resources on the defensive side of the field, and while that made sense to a degree, their lack of firepower should be a major concern. Hopefully, they will realize it before it's too late that it's best to steer clear of Brandon Aiyuk.
