The Kansas City Chiefs entered the bye week and the trade deadline with a 5-4 record. That's far below expectations, and it probably should've prompted multiple moves. Surprisingly, that wasn't the case at all.
GM Brett Veach didn't add more firepower to the roster. And while one could argue that the team might be better than what its record suggests, the fact of the matter is that they clearly needed more help, especially in the running game. Now, after watching Breece Hall dominate in Week 10, Chiefs fans should be livid.
Breece Hall Shows Chiefs What They Missed Out on at Trade Deadline
In a game where Justin Fields passed for 54 yards, one touchdown, and one interception on eleven attempts, Breece Hall was the Jets' lone source of offense. He carried the rock 21 times for 83 yards, while also adding a 42-yard reception for a touchdown.
The Chiefs infamously refused to send the Jets a third-round pick to get Hall, with Veach only offering a fourth-round selection. New York turned down that offer, knowing that it could probably get a higher compensatory draft pick if Hall left in free agency.
But with the Jets already stacked with draft picks and likely looking to add another franchise quarterback, they might choose to keep their star running back around for a little longer. They seemed reluctant to sign him to a contract extension, but that could always change.
Hall hinted at a desire to leave the Jets after initially stating that he wanted to stay. It would be hard to judge him, though, given the team's dysfunctional record and the fact that they already moved on from some of their franchise stars. Still, if the money makes sense and the Jets want to keep him, they would probably have the upper hand. New York could also simply choose to place him under the franchise tag before working to get a long-term deal done, an option Kansas City would have had if they met the Jets' demands in trade negotiations.
The Chiefs don't have a reliable running back right now. Isiah Pacheco has struggled to be as efficient and aggressive as he was earlier in his career, and he's now out with his second leg injury in the past couple of seasons.
Kareem Hunt is clearly not a workhorse running back at this stage of his career, and rookie Brashard Smith has shown signs of promise, but the team doesn't seem to think he's ready. Hall was the perfect bell-cow back to take some pressure off Patrick Mahomes' shoulders, and the Chiefs really dropped the ball with this failed trade.
