The Kansas City Chiefs may have the best quarterback in the world, but that's not enough to win in today's stacked NFL. Patrick Mahomes needs some help, and it's up to the front office to give him the weapons to help him lead the team back to the mountaintop.
The Chiefs have done a solid job of rebuilding the defense, but they haven't done much on the other side of the field. Even if they turn to a run-heavy approach with Kenneth Walker III, their wide receiver corps is far from impressive.
That's why they should make the most of the San Francisco 49ers' stalemate with Brandon Aiyuk. He's a likely post-June 1 trade candidate, and they might be happy with anything in return for his contract at this point.
The Chiefs should take a shot on Brandon Aiyuk
Of course, Aiyuk comes with some major red flags; the 49ers gave up on him for a reason. He reportedly didn't tackle his rehab in the most professional way, hasn't played in a while after a major injury, and has a history of character issues that date back to his contract extension negotiations.
All that said, he's a former second-team All-Pro who looked like a superstar in the making before this saga. Getting him for a late-draft pick would be a big win for general manager Brett Veach as a low-risk/high-reward guy.
As things stand now, the Chiefs only have Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton as guys worth starting. Rice has yet to prove that he can stay out of trouble and healthy, and Worthy looks more like a bust than a former first-round pick. As for Thornton, he showed promise as a big-play specialist, but he wasn't given much of a long leash.
Tyreek Hill may or may not be in the cards, but he's also coming off a major injury and may have lost a step. Aiyuk would be an upgrade over all of them, at least on paper, and that's a risk that's worth taking when you have Patrick Mahomes under center. Veach just has to pull the trigger.
The Chiefs are coming off the most disappointing season of the Andy Reid era, and with this likely being Travis Kelce's last dance, they owe it to themselves to go all-in, risks be damned. When healthy and locked in, Brandon Aiyuk is a 1,000-yard guy every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
