Benched Chief Already Making Case to Re-Enter Starting Lineup
Chiefs Kingdom learned today that left tackle D.J Humphries is having an MRI done on the hamstring injury he suffered on Sunday Night against the Chargers. While the severity of Humphries's injury isn't yet known, signs point to it not being good.
As a result, Wanya Morris will likely have to step back in at left tackle. That's not an ideal position for the Chiefs offensive line to be in after the struggles Morris has faced all season.
Nevertheless, Morris actually played well when he took over for Humphries in the fourth quarter. In the nine snaps Morris played, he didn't allow a QB pressure, QB Hurry, QB hit, or a sack. According to PFF, Morris also finished the game with an overall grade of 71.0, a pass-blocking grade of 79.1, and a run-blocking grade of 72.0.
Chiefs Should Already Regret D.J. Humphries Signing
Although that's an extremely small sample size, those are Morris's best career grades. Now, the challenge for Morris is to take that level of play and do it for a whole game.
So far, throughout his young two-year career, Morris has yet to be able to do that, which is why the Chiefs signed Humphries. Unfortunately, signing Humphries was always a high-risk, high-reward thing.
The Chiefs were banking on the fact that Humphries would stay healthy after returning from injury and dominate. Instead, now they are paying for the risk of the signing, which was an injury for not being completely ready to play.
Hopefully, after one week of sitting on the sidelines, Morris is able to re-enter the lineup and perform better.
