The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a frustrating 0-2 start after dropping the Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles, 20-17. There is no reason to panic for a group this accomplished, though, and there are plenty of reasons to believe that head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes will figure things out.
Still, the Chiefs shouldn't be content sitting on idle hands, and should consider actively searching for upgrades. One potential team that could quickly become sellers is the Chicago Bears.
While both franchises are 0-2, there is no denying that there is a feeling that things could quickly grow ugly for Chicago. QB Caleb Williams hasn't progressed as hoped, and the defensive upgrades were exposed by rival signal-callers J.J. McCarthy and Jared Goff in back-to-back weeks. If the Bears' struggles persist, the Chiefs could use them to help upgrade their backfield.
Chiefs GM Brett Veach Should Keep an Eye on Bears RB D'Andre Swift
On Sunday, Patrick Mahomes was Kansas City's leading rusher with both Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt struggling again. Pacheco simply hasn't shown the same burst and ability to find the open space since last season's injury, while Hunt is another year older. With this in mind, the Chiefs should keep a close eye on Bears RB D'Andre Swift.
Swift could become available if Chicago's season continues to go awry. Even in Sunday's 52-21 loss to the Detroit Lions, the veteran runner averaged 5.3 yards per carry. It is easy to imagine how much better his numbers might look if added to Reid's offense.
The one issue with a potential trade is the fact that the Chiefs need to play well enough to remain in the playoff picture while still having a clear need at the position. On top of that, the Bears need to implode to the level that puts Swift on the trade market. It seems we are closing in on this already, with the Bears being blown out by the Lions.
The Chiefs should at least reach out and see if Swift is already on the table in a potential deal. Not only would it be a great trade for Veach & Co., but it would also mean stealing a former Philadelphia Eagle who has proven to be reliable in the season's biggest moments.
Even if the Bears want to hold onto him for now, things can change quickly if the losses keep piling up. Swift in Kansas City fixes a lot of problems and takes pressure off Mahomes, giving the Chiefs a far more balanced attack down the stretch of the season.
