Andy Reid Weighs in on Latest Chiefs Reunion Rumors
On Sunday, Chiefs left tackle Wanya Morris left early in the game with a knee injury. Although Morris returned later, his injury forced rookie Kingsley Suamataia into the game.
Suamataia started the first two games this season and didn't play well. That is why Morris took over for him at left tackle.
If Morris were to suffer an unfortunate season-ending injury or have a lingering issue, Suamataia would be forced to start. That situation is not one Chiefs fans want to see because it jeopardizes the chances of the team winning three consecutive Super Bowls.
With this in mind, fans started speculating about possibly resigning Donovan Smith. Smith was the Chiefs' left tackle last season, providing good protection for Patrick Mahomes.
The suggestion that the Chiefs could resign Smith has not only reached him but also head coach Andy Reid. Reid commented on the possibility of bringing Smith back during his Monday Zoom press conference.
Coach Reid didn't rule out the possibility of bringing Smith back, saying he wouldn't say no to having him back. Obviously, a coach like Reid is never going to say no to a move that will make his team better, but he did say he believes players are progressing.
While Reid didn't single out Suamataia, it can be inferred that's who he's talking about since he was commenting on signing Smith.
Despite fans' gut reactions to players' performances, coaches see players and their development every day. So, if Reid truly believes players like Suamataia are getting better, concerns about him potentially having to start should lessen.
We'll see if the Chiefs wind up signing Smith but at least for now, it looks like it's on the table.
