The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the most renowned coaching staffs in the game. Head coach Andy Reid has surrounded himself with some of the best in business, and while that's obviously positive, it's also a bit of a risk.
We've seen the best teams in the league lose multiple assistant coaches after good seasons way too many times in the past. It happened to the Philadelphia Eagles three years ago, and to the Detroit Lions this offseason. Now, it could happen to the Chiefs.
Andy Reid Won't Stand in The Way of His Assistant Coaches
Once again, there have been some rumors about Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo being head coaching candidates for next season. When asked about that, however, Reid took the high road and was nothing but supportive of his colleagues
"I'm his biggest fan, and Spags likewise. If they have that opportunity, more power to them," Reid said via Chiefs insider Charles Goldman.
Truth be told, it would make perfect sense for a team to at least consider either of them for a head coaching vacancy. They both have previous head coaching experience, and while things didn't go their way, they're two experienced and respected coaches.
Spagnuolo is widely considered the best or one of the best defensive coordinators of all time. He didn't fare well in his days with the then-St. Louis Rams or as the New York Giants' interim coach, logging an 11-41 record, but he's certainly paid his dues ever since. As a four-time Super Bowl champion and the architect behind the Chiefs' stellar defense, he's earned his shot.
As for Nagy, his recent work hasn't been as impressive. He was often singled out as one of the weakest links in the coaching staff, as he failed to bring the offense back to the level they were in the Eric Bieniemy days. Even so, he's got a proven track record as an offensive assistant. Nagy went 34-31 in three years in charge of the Chicago Bears, but he wasn't the only one to blame for their shortcomings.
Whatever the case, the Chiefs will just have to cross that bridge when they get there. For now, they have to focus on Week 7 and their divisional matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
