Andy Reid Provides Crucial Patrick Mahomes Update for Tuesday Practice
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs are still uncertain about superstar QB Patrick Mahomes' status for Saturday's Week 15 contest with the Texans. Based on Andy Reid's comments on Tuesday, the coaching staff is at least going to give Mahomes a chance to test the injured ankle.
Betting odds suggest that Mahomes isn't likely to play, potentially giving Carson Wentz his first start with the organization. Reid confirmed that it'd be Wentz's job should Mahomes be unable to participate.
Based on the way the offensive line has struggled and how good Houston's defensive front is, it'd probably be wise to give Mahomes a week to rest. The last thing the team needs is for him to make the injury worse with the playoffs right around the corner.
Andy Reid Gives New Patrick Mahomes Injury Update on Tuesday
While the Chiefs are 13-1 are control their own destiny in the AFC, it's been a confusing year by Mahomes' standards. Left tackle issues and frequent injuries at major positions have caused problems, and now Mahomes himself needs to get healthy to avoid disaster.
Making matters worse, Saturday begins a stretch of three games in 11 days. The Chiefs have the Steelers on Christmas Day (Wednesday of next week) and then quickly turn around to face the Broncos.
Most Chiefs fans would prefer that Mahomes' ankle is okay in the playoffs rather than beat the Texans. Reid knows how important these final weeks are, so he'll be careful. We've seen Mahomes win a Super Bowl on a bad ankle before, though it's a lot easier when he's feeling 100%.
For Wentz, Saturday may represent an opportunity to prove he's still a starting-caliber player in this league. He's only on a one-year deal and wants to lead a team. Should he play well against a good defense like the Texans, perhaps another organization will decide to give the former second-overall pick another shot.
In the meantime, all eyes are on Mahomes as he tries to overcome long odds to suit up.
