Chiefs vs. Texans Opening Odds Reveal Patrick Mahomes Injury Status in Week 16
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs finally enjoyed a complete game in Week 15, dominating the Browns 21-7 in a contest that wasn't as close as even that score indicates. Now, Kansas City will host the Houston Texans with an opportunity to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a victory couple with the Bills losing.
Unfortunately, opening odds for next week's matchup indicate that three-time Super Bowl MVP QB Patrick Mahomes won't be playing.
Mahomes suffered another ankle injury late in the victory over Cleveland. He hasn't been officially ruled out, though sportsbooks clearly believe it'll be Carson Wentz under center.
Chiefs vs. Texans Betting Odds Suggest Patrick Mahomes Won't Play
FanDuel Sportsbook has fluctuated the odds between Texans -2.5 and -3 after originally having the Chiefs favored. Mahomes' ankle ailment shifted the line dramatically, flipping all the way in Houston's favor.
Wentz is among the best backups in the NFL, though he's no Mahomes. C.J. Stroud and Houston have a team capable of making a deep playoff run, so it makes sense they'd be favorites without Mahomes.
Kansas City had failed to cover the spread in seven straight games prior to Sunday's win. Finally, the team played a complete game and dominated in all facets. Unfortunately, the victory was short-lived thanks to Mahomes getting hurt.
Injuries are the only thing that could derail this magical Chiefs season. They're 13-1 and likely to have homefield advantage throughout the postseason. That said, none of it matters if Mahomes isn't 100%. We've seen him win a Super Bowl on a bad ankle before, yet no Chiefs fan wants to have to see him do it again.
Even if the Texans win, the Chiefs are still in pole position to claim that top seed. They're two games ahead of the Bills with three to play, controlling their destiny in a bid to become the first team in history to win three straight Super Bowls.
This game doesn't truly matter. Regardless, it's a matchup the Chiefs would obviously prefer to win. Here's hoping Mahomes' injury isn't as serious as it initially appeared.
