3 Chiefs on Thin Ice After Backbreaking Loss to Bills in Week 11
By Joe Summers
3. Andy Reid's Conservatism
Andy Reid can never truly be on thin ice. He'll go down as perhaps the best coach in NFL history and has forgotten more about football than any of us will ever learn. Reid is amazing, yet his conservative approach reared its ugly head in a massive moment.
Reasonable minds will disagree, and most in the media haven't viewed this decision as a large problem. However, Reid's choice to kick an extra point down three in the fourth quarter represented a meager attitude that failed to put the game in Patrick Mahomes' hands.
If Reid had gone for two points, the Chiefs could've been down just one point as the Bills drove the field. Sean McDermott, also known for his conservatism, likely wouldn't have gone for two points if Allen scored the TD on fourth down. That would've given Mahomes a chance to tie the game on his final drive, yet Reid instead trusted the defense.
That's an understandable decision in most circumstances. Considering how effortlessly Buffalo moved the ball though, this is a situation that demanded adjustments. The defense wasn't stopping him, so Reid needed to be aggressive. He wasn't, and the Chiefs never had a real chance to tie late.
Reid also elected to punt on fourth-and-one on their own side of the field. That decision wasn't as egregious, yet it still represents a conscious choice to try to avoid a loss rather than gain a win.
When you have Mahomes, you should trust him. It's as simple as that. He could've easily gotten one yard in that situation, just like he could've gotten two yards on the two-point conversion. If this happens again in the playoffs, it may cost the Chiefs a three-peat.
