Week 10 Means Raiders Week for the Kansas City Chiefs
By Lucas Murphy
The Kansas City Chiefs will match up against the Las Vegas Raiders in a colossal AFC West showdown on Sunday Night Football. Heading into Week 10, the Raiders are 5-3 while the Chiefs sit at 5-4. Both teams are trying to find a grove. KC is coming off of a victory against the Green Bay Packers. On the other hand, the silver and black fell to the New York Giants.
Chiefs Versus Raiders Historic Rivalry
This rivalry runs deep, and the fan bases get extra fired up for this matchup. The two teams have played each other 124 times. The Chiefs are currently winning the overall record 68-54-2. In 2020 the two teams would split the series. Each team would win on the road. KC would go on the road and win in newly opened Allegiant Stadium. The silver and black came into Arrowhead Stadium and were able to steal a win against the KC.
According to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, “The Las Vegas Raiders took a victory lap of sorts around Arrowhead Stadium in October after beating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-32 for their first win in the rivalry since Jon Gruden returned as coach in 2018. Their team buses circled the stadium on their way to Kansas City International Airport for the trip home.”
Chiefs Rivalry Was Boosted By Marty Schottenheimer
Former head coach and Chiefs legend Marty Schottenheimer heightened the level of dislike for the Raiders. Marty talked about Raiders week, “I have always just been very uncomfortable about the fact that the Raiders management has continued to steadfastly to feel as though they’re better than the rest. And I’m not necessarily just talking about the on-the-field aspect of it. Al Davis made significant contributions to the American Football League.”
He continued saying, “I remember one game — it occurred before I became the coach — but I remember watching it and studying it on tape. The game where the Raiders came into Arrowhead and were rather belligerent about the way they were going about their business, and I think they won rather handily, and that really kind of stuck with me. I’ve always thought the league was more important as a whole than any individual team, and I don’t think the Raiders ever felt that way.”
Chiefs and Raiders First Game in 2021
The Raiders have been dealing with a tremendous amount of items off the football field. The team has plenty to offer in this Sunday Night Football game. Derek Carr is looking to lead his team to victory and continue upon his productive season. They have a dual-threat in the backfield, Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake. After losing Henry Ruggs III, the Raiders would obtain DeSean Jackson. Like the Chiefs, the Raiders have a very elite tight end, Darren Waller. He is a talented player with a lot of ability. It has been on display since joining the Oakland Raiders and transitioning to Las Vegas. Defensively this team is ranked 10th in yards allowed per game (340.6). They have forced ten turnovers. Yannick Ngakoue leads the team in sacks with six, followed by Maxx Crosby with five.
The Chiefs will look to continue their winning streak. In Week 8, they beat the New York Giants, and in Week 9, they defeated the Green Bay Packers. The defense has been playing at a higher success rate, with Frank Clark playing much better. Chris Jones has kicked back inside to defensive tackle, and his production has increased. Melvin Ingram is becoming more comfortable in the defense. The offense will continue to look at making connections and not turn the football over.
In the end, it is Raiders week. The game will be aired on Sunday Night Football in Las Vegas, Nevada, at Allegiant Stadium. Both team’s fanbases look to have bragging rights come Monday.
