The KC Royals are leading the AL Central as of now. While this won’t last, let’s enjoy it while it’s happening.

The storyline for the Kansas City Royals entering the season (aside from Bobby Witt Jr., of course) was the fact that the American League Central is stacked. The White Sox have a terrifying lineup, solid pitchers, and hired Tony La Russa to coach them while Cleveland is always a team with stout pitching and the Twins continue to be a top team as well.

Because of this, no one really thought much of the little ol’ Royals. They made nice moves in the offseason, both in free agency and via trade, and while people liked the moves, it was always the same schpeal every time. “The Royals will be interesting, but they’ll finish fourth in the division.”

It’s hard to fault people for this opinion, as the Royals had back-to-back 100-loss seasons in 2018 and 2019. They showed promise in 2020 but the season was significantly shorter than what we’re used to.

Yet, here we are, two weeks into the season and who is leading the AL Central? Well, that would be the Royals, who have yet to lose a series this season.

The KC Royals are leading the AL Central through the first two weeks of the season.

More from Kansas City Royals

Look, no one truly expects the Royals to still be atop the AL Central standings when the season has wrapped up. The other three teams might not all finish ahead of them in the standings, but one of those three teams is probably going to win the division.

With that said, however, the Royals have shown early in the season that they’re going to make things more interesting in the AL Central. They’re not going to just sit back and let their divisional foes run roughshod over them. The Royals are going to fight hard and they showed that by splitting the series with both the Indians and the White Sox. They also won the series against an Angels team that can hit the ball well.

Maybe the Kansas City Royals don’t make the postseason in 2021. Maybe they don’t even finish with a winning record. This year wasn’t supposed to result in either of those things, so as long as the Royals remain competitive and stay in the playoff race through September, that’d be a win for this ball club.

Right now, they’re honestly one of the most fun MLB teams to watch, so let’s continue to enjoy watching this team while they’re at the top of the pack.
