The KC Chiefs need more help on their offensive line and trading up might be the best way to get one of the better talents in this draft.

After watching the Kansas City Chiefs‘ offensive line in the Super Bowl, it’s hard to argue that they need major help this offseason in that department. Unfortunately, they pick late in the first round and that means most of the premier tackle options will be off the board by that point.

If the Chiefs want one of the best tackle prospects, they’ll probably have to trade up. Chad Reuter of NFL.com proposed that the Chiefs swap spots with the Jaguars (who have their second pick of round one at No. 25 overall) to find a talented tackle option.

"As part of his attempt to rebuild the offensive line, Andy Reid could very well emulate the Wirfs trade that the Bucs pulled off last year, finding at least one solid starter to keep Patrick Mahomes from constantly fleeing pressure.Assuming the top four tackles are off the board by 25, Kansas City could target Samuel Cosmi or Alabama left tackle Alex Leatherwood here."

Drafting an offensive lineman in the first round has been discussed ad nauseam this offseason, but it’s for good reason. The Chiefs are going to pay Patrick Mahomes $500 million over the next decade so they better put some stronger efforts into protecting him and making sure he’s still worth that contract 10 years from now.

As Reuter mentioned, moving up six spots could potentially put them in a position to draft Samuel Cosmi of Texas or Alex Leatherwood of Alabama. This could also keep them in contention to land Notre Dame’s Liam Eichenberg, who has been linked to this team frequently throughout the offseason.

Drafting an offensive lineman in the first round isn’t sexy, but the Chiefs don’t need to go for the sexy pick. They have the best quarterback in the league, the best tight end, and one of the best wide receivers, so now it’s time to ensure the team can get everything they can out of those guys by protecting the quarterback.

I personally wouldn’t be upset about the Chiefs trading up to get an offensive tackle because it’s a strong need. At the same time, I understand why some might be upset, as this team has several needs to fill and they’d have to give up two picks later in the draft to make this move. It’s not a huge price to pay, but those picks could definitely help mold certain spots on the roster.
