KC Chiefs: Samuel Cosmi could be the left tackle of the future
The KC Chiefs haven’t been linked to Samuel Cosmi much, but he makes a lot of sense to fill their need at left tackle.
As of now, the left tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs‘ 2021 season isn’t on their roster. They could still sign either Russell Okung or Alejandro Villanueva to be their left tackle this year and that’s a good plan even if they plan to draft one early.
Drafting a tackle needs to be a top priority no matter what the Chiefs do at the position in free agency. If he’s still on the board when it’s time for KC to make their first-round pick, Samuel Cosmi out of Texas would be hard to pass up.
Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus linked the Chiefs to Cosmi in his latest mock draft and had this to say about his pick,
"I opted for Cosmi due to his experience (three seasons as a starting tackle at Texas) and strong play in pass protection throughout his career (pass-blocking grades of 82.0 or higher in all three seasons). Cosmi also put on an absolute show during his pro day with 90th percentile or higher testing numbers across the board."
Sure, Cosmi would be an excellent addition to the Chiefs’ roster, but it’s hard to say if he’ll still be available when the Chiefs are on the clock. He’s typically been mocked in the 20s so it’s possible that the Chiefs could opt to trade up to get him if they do find him to be the best fit for their offensive line.
Samuel Cosmi offers the KC Chiefs a versatile tackle who could fill a spot of need.
During his years with the Texas Longhorns, Cosmi spent time at both tackle spots, but most of his college career saw him at left tackle.
While I’d still rather the Chiefs sign someone — either Okung or Villanueva — to play left tackle this year, they could still draft Cosmi and let the competition play out this summer to see if he impresses enough to earn the job. If he doesn’t, he can be a depth piece and take that time to learn before taking over full-time in 2022.
Cosmi would be a tremendous addition to the Chiefs’ offensive line, but the biggest question is if he’ll even be available late in the first round. With so many teams needing offensive tackles, Cosmi making it to pick No. 31 seems highly unlikely.
If he is though, he’d be a great pick for the Chiefs.
